The potence of the media is immense

Scarcely anyone is unaware of the term 'mass media'. Everyday we use the media sources to learn the latest domestic and international news, find necessary information, to entertain or to listen to the weather forecast. The importance of mass media nowadays is huge. The media shape and form buying decisions, feature new goods and services, educate and make us think. Mass media play a significant role in shaping and reflecting public opinion, connecting people and the world. The media have a strong social and cultural influence upon society, since it can reach a wide audience. They consist of four primary sources: television, press, radio and the Web. Daily millions of magazines and papers are published worldwide. The list of them seems endless. There are different international and local papers, dailies and weeklies, quality papers that cater for the better educated readers and popular newspapers that sell to a larger readership. Some papers devote much space to politics, financial and commercial issues; while others focus on 'human interest stories'. Since the advent of radio, many more people have got access to the latest information. We normally turn on the radio when driving a car to listen to the news bulletin and news breaks broadcast from the spot. Listeners are particularly much into call-in talk-shows and music charts. According to estimates, the vast majority of people consider television their primary source of information. Our everyday life is often planned according to the program schedule. We turn it on to view our favorite series and chat-shows, to watch newly released movies, music videos and news programs. Whereas TV broadcasts are scheduled, the Internet allows us to have access to information and amusement 24/7. Being both the video and audio source of information, the Web contains vast databases of information in all languages. It is well-known for the diversity of standpoints presented, huge collections of music and films, e-encyclopedias intended to facilitate the search on the Web, e-books and websites of papers and magazines. Life without the media would be dull and limited. However, 'addiction' to some sources of amusement, such as watching TV and searching on the Web for hours, can adversely impact upon health and interpersonal interaction.
