Lotus announce Williams wind-tunnel deal

Lotus have announced an expansion of their wind-tunnel operations after signing a deal to use one of the two tunnels run by Williams. The development means the team will run a two-tunnel programme from September, with the Aerolab facility in Italy working in conjunction with the one at Williams' Grove site. “There are a number of reasons why I am delighted that we have signed this deal,” explained Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes. “From a practical perspective there are the obvious benefits of increasing our wind tunnel activity and using a state of the art facility in the UK, and I am sure that will immediately help Marianne Hinson (Head of Aerodynamics and CFD) and her team to work even more effectively in one of the key areas of the ongoing development of our team.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel turned the tables on his rivals, who had come here expecting Red Bull to be at a disadvantage, by taking pole position in Canada on Saturday with a lap of 1m 13.014s. Fernando Alonso jumped into contention with the fastest lap time in Friday's second practice session in Montreal, taking his Ferrari round the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1m 15.107s, to go 0.369s clear of world champion Sebastian Vettel's 1m 15.476s. De la Rosa to stand in for Perez in Canada

Formula One veteran Pedro de la Rosa is to replace Sergio Perez at Sauber for the remainder of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend on safety grounds, after the Mexican rookie felt unwell following opening practice. Perez crashed heavily two weeks ago in Monaco qualifying and was unable to participate in the Monte Carlo race. He spent two nights in hospital after suffering concussion and a bruised thigh, but safely passed the FIA medical to compete in Montreal this weekend

Nico Rosberg proved correct Jenson Button's pre-event prediction that Mercedes would be very strong here in Montreal, by dominating Friday morning's opening practice session for Sunday's Canadian round. Button suggested that Mercedes gain up to 20 km/h from their DRS rear wing, whereas most others gain only 12 km/h. Rosberg took control of the session in the final third of the 90 minutes, lapping in 1m 16.002s to depose pacesetter Fernando Alonso's Ferrari, then improved that to 1m 15.591s.
